At least MGM is willing to help the people out
I don't think this a sign of MGM acting out of any sense of morality. This is a liability payout, through and through.
so where does everyone stand on this? Just curious. its a slippery slope if we say MGM is at fault, and that they should have checked all his bags or ran them through metal detectors.
I don’t think MGM is at fault. There are tons of people who go in and out of that hotel every day, and it would be impossible to notice one person carrying luggage. And even if they did notice, they wouldn’t do anything about it. It’s not illegal to bring a bunch of weapons into your room.
Didnt he bring 32 duffel bags in?
Over the course of 7 days, in batches
I mean, that would raise alarm bells for me. 32 is a LOT of stuff. I don’t know why they didnt think it could be a bomb or something.
Do you know how many people go in and out of the Mandalay Bay, daily? It’s not too far-fetched to say he wasn’t noticed, at all.
He was noticed though - the bell boy (idk job title) escorted him and his bags to the room repeatedly
according to this video by the NYT, the most he moved at a time was 7 bags and it was different bellmen.
the guys who carry your bags on a cart rely on tips and are not making enough money to accuse high roller guests of having a suspicious amount of luggage.
I worked in a hotel for nine months. It was a 100 room hotel instead of a giant monstrosity of a hotel like the Mandalay Bay, so much less activity.
We didn’t see everyone who walked in and out of the hotel. We had cameras, but didn’t have someone monitoring them 24/7. And if we did, a person bringing luggage to his room is completely normal. We wouldn’t have cared even if we did notice him specifically.
Here’s a related example: We had a guy bring his own arsenal of weapons into our hotel. We only knew this because he asked an employee to come in and help with his cable. We didn’t see him bring the weapons into his room. It was the first thing staff knew about on shift change, and we were all aware to watch for him being weird, but there was nothing we could do beyond that because owning those weapons is not illegal, and we have no policy against bringing them into his room (because it is not illegal).
We also tended to be a lot more lenient with the regulars and the high-level club members than with the average guest. Mandalay Bay saw a guy who regularly pays his bills on time and doesn’t cause trouble, so they let him do what he wanted.
Because of this incident there were several changes to my hotels safety procedures. For one, a new rule where someone on staff has to see the occupant of the room once every 24 hours or we (security) are called to check on the room and the guest.
If everyone got the same amount they be getting about $18,000
Just enough money to cover their ambulance ride to the hospital
Remember when youtube took down a funding page for the victims.
